Foster Me!

Meet Sediba, our first rescue elephant that required a crane truck. Little Sediba had fallen into a five-meter-deep handmade well and had been stuck there for about two days with no other elephants nearby.

This parched baby was on the hunt for water and, sensing some, she must have stepped right into this uncovered hole in the ground in the dark of night.

When we finally got to her, we had to hire a crane truck to lift her out of this space that was so small she couldn’t even turn around. And at not too much more than a meter tall herself, five meters was quite a fall for this poor girl. This remarkable rescue had its share of nail-biting moments as we maneuvered her up and out of the hole and deposited her onto the ground safely.

We almost lost Sediba in the crucial first few days, but, thanks to the love and dedication of our team and Dr. Caron, we were able to get her back on her feet.

That first week, her handler Mayo looked for any food that would interest her. She wasn’t a big fan of apples, or a milk bottle, but he was able to find some soft green grass by the edge of our water that really got her attention and started her caring about food again. Soon after, Mayo got her to take her first bottle.

Mayo would not give up on this sweet girl and worked tirelessly to give her love and the desire to fight for her life. Sediba is slowly gaining weight and becoming a happy little elephant. Now she’s off to browse and forage with Matriarch Bokamoso and the herd every day.
