About 35 minutes southeast of Elephant Havens is the village of Matsaudi. On December 4th, two local children called to report a baby elephant who was alone in the village. As we readied the rescue team, this same little female calf was reported to us by Dr. Misha Kruck, our staff physician and co-founder of Okavango Air Rescue. The baby elephant had since turned up alone at her farm’s front gate. It’s possible her mother was shot by local farmers due to competition for the small amount of water available. The drought has dragged on without the usual life-sustaining November rains, so water is much in demand.
Thankfully, the rescue mission went smoothly. We brought her back to the orphanage where she is being fed and loved and given as much milk to drink as she needs. Little Misha’s name is a tribute to one of her rescuers. She can count on us and the herd to take good care of her from now on.
(We’re grateful that our outreach efforts are finding the local youth, and that they are responding by showing empathy and respect for these solitary babies now that they have a place to report them to.)
