Foster Me!
This cute girl had Scott wrapped around her little trunk from the day we found her. Linyanti is one of the few elephants that do not care for the game pellets that are such a treat for the rest of the herd. She just turns up her trunk and looks at us like, “Is that all you have?”
Well, Scott hated that she didn’t like her treats and caved right away. We found him hiding in a corner with her, stealthily slipping her pieces of apple. She’s his special girl. So now, even when Scott is gone, she still gets apples instead of game pellets.
Before we rescued Linyanti, she had apparently had an encounter with either a hyena or crocodile. Luckily, all the predator got was her tail. She is now the third little one that we have rescued with a missing tail.
We were called to rescue Linyanti after she and her mother had wandered into a safari camp in the Linyanti wetlands area near the Namibian border. Unfortunately (and possibly the result of the attack that took her baby’s tail), the mother was aggressive and was considered a threat after she injured a tourist and destroyed some of the buildings. The Department of Wildlife and Natural Parks was called in and the mother was euthanized.
We brought Linyanti back to Elephant Havens where she could grow up with a surrogate “Mother” and several brothers and sisters in her new home. She is settling in nicely. Scott made sure of that.
