Foster Me!

This little girl was only 15 months old when her life took a tragic turn—her mother fell victim to human-wildlife conflict. Delta was left orphaned, alone, and struggling to survive.

Fortunately, three young fishermen stumbled upon Delta while she was trying to find comfort and much needed water along the nearby Tlhamalakane River. They reported the sighting to the village elders, who then contacted the Department of Wildlife. Due to transport shortages, Delta had to wait a day for rescue, but, thankfully, she remained in the area waiting for help to arrive. When we did get there, we loaded her up to take her to her new home.

Like most orphans on arrival, Delta was severely underweight, dehydrated, and in dire need of care. But with our dedicated team’s expert care, she’s now flourishing and has fit right into our herd. She took her first bottle without any prodding, and now she eagerly devours her milk bottle every three hours. We thought it was fitting to name her after the Okavango Delta, a UNESCO World Heritage site and Elephant Havens’ home.

Delta’s story is a testament to the devastating impact of human-wildlife conflict, but also a shining example of compassion, resilience, and the incredible work being done at Elephant Havens. We’re honored to provide Delta with a safe haven and we can’t wait to watch this brave girl blossom.
