Foster Me!
One day a farmer called to tell us about a very young elephant he had seen wandering nearby with absolutely no other elephants in sight. He offered to follow her until we could arrive. The eight-hour trek took us northwest to the panhandle, near the village of Sekondeko.
Thanks to this kind soul we were able to rescue the little girl without delay and bring her back to Elephant Havens to be loved and cared for. The team chose to name her Bokamoso, which means “future”.
“Boko” is a feisty little girl and really runs the show, but she was so gentle and easy with the handlers that she spent only two weeks in quarantine before moving into the herd and making the daily rounds of the beautiful Elephant Havens reserve.
All of the females, MmaMotse, Bonolo and Tshepiso, rarely leave her side. She is constantly surrounded by them—their trunks wrapped around her little head with loving care. If she wants a little space she pushes her much larger companions and lets out a little scream at the same time. It is just darling watching her be “in charge”.
Oh, and she has broken all records for how fast an elephant can drain two liters of milk!
We have no idea what happened to her family, but we mean to give her the brightest future she could ever have.
